About:                    Eclectic, outrageous, sometimes mystifying but always imbued with a powerful jazz consciousness, the music of Sun Ra has withstood its skeptics and detractors for nearly three generations. And well it should, since Sun Ra has been both apart of and ahead of the jazz tradition during that time. Like Duke Ellington and swing-era pioneer Fletcher Henderson, Sun Ra learned early on to write music in an arranged form that showcased the specific talents of his individual Arkestra members, and he has retained the services of some of these musicians to this day: John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Julian Priester for example since they first joined in the 1950’s.

About:                    Originally a duo comprised of Cedric Myton and Roydel “Ashanti” Johnsonthe Congos brought Watty Burnett into the group to achieve their classic falsetto-tenor-baritone sound. They are known for their landmark recording, Heart Of The Congos, released in 1977. Working with Lee “Scratch” Perry at his Black Ark Studios in Kingston, they created a masterpiece, one of (if not the) finest production job of Perry’s long and prolific career. Cedric Myton grew up in St. Catherine, Jamaica and began his singing career as a member of the Tartans in the late ’60s. Singing in a tuneful rocksteady style, the Tartans scored hits with songs like “Dance All Night” and “Far Beyond the Sun”. Roy Johnson, a native of Hanover, Jamaica, grew up singing spirituals at home and cut his teeth as a member of Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. Derrick Burnett grew up in Port Antonio, the eldest of nine children, and learned to sing in the Baptist church his family attended. Burnett ultimately became a regular session vocalist and instrumentalist (drums, percussion, and bass guitar) for Perry and recorded singles in his own right for the producer. Together this core line-up continues to tour the world and record classic roots reggae.
